The process for becoming a member of First Presbyterian
Church can take different forms for different people.
Some people come to worship for a few weeks and feel
ready to join this congregation. Other folks may come to
worship, join an adult class, sing in a choir, and
participate in the life of the congregation in a variety
of ways for many months before they choose to seek
church membership.
Our desire is simply for people to grow in their walk
with Jesus Christ. Joining the church should come when
each individual feels ready for that step in his or her
own discipleship. We are pleased to have persons
participate in all aspects of the life of this
congregation both before and after becoming a church
member.
Responsibilities of Members
A follower of
Jesus Christ responds to his or her spiritual yearnings
in many ways. We have chosen to focus on four areas as
responsibilities of members. We encourage you to
consider God’s call on your life and your response in
worship, prayer, study and stewardship. These four
aspects of our walk with Jesus guide, mold, and give
direction to our spiritual lives. Worship, prayer,
study, and stewardship give us a starting point and a
way to daily live out our faith and respond to what
Jesus is doing inside of us.
Worship
inspires and motivates us. We bring all of our joy,
thanksgiving, praise, struggles, and difficulties to
God. We come together as a community which supports one
another. And we leave prepared to walk with Jesus during
the week and to look for opportunities to be in ministry
to others.
Prayer helps us
to focus. Our lives are filled with many things. Prayer
makes a place in our day for us to remember what is
important. Prayer helps us to see the needs of others
and to focus on what God had for us. As we go to the
Lord in prayer daily, we lay our concerns upon Jesus and
we listen for his voice.
Study moves us
forward in our spiritual growth. The Christian is drawn
to the Bible because it is God’s Word. We read the Bible
daily so that God may speak to us in it. We seek to
gather to study in order that we may share with others
and benefit from what God is teaching them as well.
Stewardship is
our joyful response to what Jesus has done for us. God
has given us everything. We give back a portion or our
time, money, skills, gifts, and abilities. We give out
of a wonderful desire to share with others what God has
blesses us with.
We believe that
God has given gifts and abilities to each person. We
hope as you become acquainted with this congregation and
the opportunities for ministry here, God will show you
ways to use your gifts in service to Him in the
community of faith.
Rights of Members
There are two
privileges that are reserved for church members. Only
members may serve as elders and deacons in the
Presbyterian Church. And only members may vote at
congregational meetings in our church.
Requirements of Members
The only
requirement of members in the Presbyterian Church is
that they acknowledge their personal commitment to Jesus
Christ as their Lord and Savior.
If you are
interested in becoming a member of this congregation
please talk with Pastor Richard or Tim Wilson. New
members can be received by the session at any time.
Membership can be transferred from another church or can
be made on the basis of your affirmation of faith in
Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
New members and
those considering membership are encouraged to take the
four week course, "What It Means to Be a Presbyterian,"
which is offered several times a year during the Sunday
school hour.
